Our first event will be an all-women powerlifting meet Sunday April 23rd at 9AM.  All proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood.

This is an unsanctioned meet and open to all strength levels. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced lifters are welcome to compete. You can register for the full meet (squat/bench/deadlift), or for individual lifts.  We will have prizes for best total in each weight class, and best lift in each weight class!

The brain is in charge. It’s that simple. If we want to improve movement, we must understand the brain and its role in creating, shaping and changing how we move.
Neurofacilitation, a term coined by Maximum Training Solutions, refers to the strategic, methodical process of stimulating the nervous system to make permanent plastic changes in the brain that shape how we think and move. This is neuroplasticity at its best.
Improving movement patterns is important for everyone. Movement quality not only improves a person’s quality of life, but recent research demonstrates that it also affects longevity and cognition. As professionals, our role is to get people out of pain and moving well, so then they can move often. We often think of improving movement by fixing a person’s structure, or “hardware”. While this is important for some, most people’s poor movement abilities are related to a “software” issue embedded somewhere in the complex motor control system. We will explore the nervous system’s impact on movement quality and demonstrate strategies to improve these patterns quickly and easily through facilitating the nervous system.

Unwind for the Holidays

In the last month of the year, holiday planning, last minute shopping and traveling can make us feel tightly wound. This pre holiday practice will focus on releasing tension and grips held in the inner hips. Limitations in range of motion in our hips are often brought on by sitting/ standing positions at work or our workouts. Holiday stresses can also add to that. In this workshop we will explore poses that lengthen the hamstrings and open the hips, creating space and quietness inside and out.

The holiday season is a time for coming together, surrounding ourselves with family and friends to give thanks for all our blessings. While heartwarming, even times as joyous as these can be stressful. In this workshop we will explore elements of twisting that help us unwind and release. The "squeeze and soak" actions in twists or revolved postures help revitalize the internal organs and relieve tension in the back and shoulders. Psychologically, twist teach us to remain calm in the face of anything that can wind us up in our holiday planning.

Join us for the Second Annual Kettlebell Open!!

This is an unofficially contested event. All lifts will be offered in all weights (including intermediate weights) for both male and female athletes.

Athletes can compete in 5 and 10 minute events:
Long Cycle using 1 or 2 bells
Biathlon using 1 or 2 bells during jerk segment
Snatch

This event is intended to provide experienced lifters with a chance to test in a competition style environment as well as allowing new lifters the opportunity to experience the sport in a fun and low pressure atmosphere.

Lifters of all skill and age levels are encouraged to participate.

For more than 20 years, Gareth Thomas has been coach & advisor to top endurance athletes including world & national champions in Triathlon, Duathlon & Cycling.  

Gareth is regarded as a leading authority on blood lactate testing and its application for endurance athletes. He created the TRIO performance labs in Los Angeles to bring sound training principles to athletes of all abilities. 

As a special introductory offer, Coach Gareth has partnered with the Brooklyn Athletic Club to bring his TRIO run testing to the club over the weekend of the 2016 New York Marathon.

Self Defense Five Week Course

Brooklyn Athletic Club is very excited to be offering ANOTHER Specialty program! We will be conducting a 5 week Self Defense Course. This IS NOT a 5 week crash course on any specific Martial Art, but is specifically designed to help you be aware of your surroundings, create distance , basic blows, and escape with the objective to get you out of a bad situation as quickly as possible. We are looking to break this down as simple as it can be so you can apply your training when you need it most. The first 2 sessions will cover all the striking and escapes, the 3 following weeks we will drill home what you have learned so you can practice on your own and use it when you need it. This course is for both men and women. Street clothes and a good shoe to protect your feet are recommended. 


Many of you might not be aware but our director Larry started out as a Gymnast and then started training in a large variety of Martial arts, Japanese Jujitsu, Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu, Arnis. Everyone of these martial arts has a value. Like many people that enter the martial arts they are looking for self defense. Along his travels he met a very experienced and accomplished martial artist, Carl Cestari. Carl Asked Larry what he was doing this for and the conversation went something like this, " Kid why are you training in this style- Larry to learn how to fight- Carl, you know this stuff will get you killed in a real fight right? - Larry - really- Carl- Try it on me- Larry soon found himself hit really hard and on the ground- Carl, try it again- bang, once again Larry was hit and on the ground- Carl to Larry- you seem like a good kid, come to my house this Saturday and we will talk. Larry spent the next 10 years going to Carl's house and training in the basement with the crew. No rank, nothing just hard training that would work.
